The Power of Now: Embracing the Present in the Spirit of Alan Watts

Introduction

"Realise deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life." This quote by the great philosopher Alan Watts encapsulates a profound truth that often eludes us in the hustle of everyday life. As we embark on this Monday, let’s take a moment to dive into the essence of being present—drawing inspiration from Watts’ teachings on mindfulness, the flow of time, and the beauty of living fully in the now.

The Illusion of Time: Past and Future

Alan Watts often spoke of time as a construct—a useful tool, but one that can trap us if we let it. The past, he argued, is a memory, a ghostly echo of what once was, and the future is a mere projection, a shadow of what might be. Both are illusions that distract us from the only reality we can truly experience: the present moment.

We often find ourselves haunted by regrets of the past or paralyzed by fears of the future. But as Watts would remind us, the past and future are not real—they are thoughts in the mind. The present, however, is where life happens. It’s the point at which your consciousness meets reality. To be fully alive is to be fully present, to experience the world not through the lens of what was or what could be, but through the direct encounter with what is.

The Art of Letting Go: Freeing Yourself from the Past

Watts taught that holding onto the past is like trying to grasp water—impossible and futile. The past cannot be changed, and clinging to it only serves to anchor us in suffering. To be present, we must let go of the past, not in a way that denies its existence, but in a way that frees us from its grip.

This Monday, as you step into the new week, try to release the weight of yesterday. Each moment offers a fresh beginning, untainted by what came before. Let go of the need to dissect and analyze, and instead, embrace the peace that comes with simply being. In the words of Watts, “Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone.”

The Futility of Worry: Trusting in the Flow

Worrying about the future is another trap that pulls us away from the present. Watts often likened life to a river—ever flowing, ever changing. To worry is to attempt to stop the river’s flow, to try to control what is inherently uncontrollable. Yet, in trying to predict and prepare for every possible outcome, we lose our connection to the present moment.

Watts encouraged us to trust in the natural flow of life, to surrender to the rhythm of existence. This doesn’t mean we should be passive, but rather that we should engage with life as it is, without trying to force it into our preconceived notions of how it should be. The present moment is always fresh, always new, and always unfolding in ways we cannot predict. By being present, we can navigate life’s currents with grace and adaptability, responding to what is rather than what we fear might be.

Mindfulness: The Path to Presence

For Alan Watts, mindfulness was not just a practice, but a way of life. It’s about being fully aware of your experiences, thoughts, and emotions as they arise, without becoming attached to them. It’s the art of living in the now, of experiencing life directly, without the filter of past memories or future anxieties.

Mindfulness invites us to step back from the constant chatter of the mind and to engage with the world in a state of open, non-judgmental awareness. It’s about savouring the simple moments—feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, listening to the sound of the wind, or even just breathing. In these moments, we find a profound connection to life, to the now, and to the essence of being.

Conclusion: The Eternal Now

As you move through this Monday, take a page from Alan Watts’ teachings and immerse yourself in the present moment. The time is now. Be here. Be present. Let go of the past, release your worries about the future, and dive deeply into the richness of the now. This is where life happens. This is where you find peace, joy, and the true essence of your existence.

In the spirit of Watts, remember that life is not a series of destinations but a continuous, unfolding journey. Every moment is a new beginning, an opportunity to experience the wonder of existence. So, be here now, for this is the only moment that truly matters.

This is very helpful on being present. I am a tai chi instructor and always looking for different ways to tell my how to be present. For me personally, I think this will be most helpful at night when I wake up and my mind starts running amuck. That is when my mind runs from this to that and won't shut down. I think, for me, I am going to try to incorporate being present when I am wanting to be asleep. Feel the sun on my face, even in the dark.
